What a beautiful and enriching experience!
MUNOM is short for Model United Nations of Munich. It is a simulation of the real United Nations. Every year in November the European School Munich hosts about 450 participants from which around 350 are delegates. Delegates get to represent a country and are assigned to a committee. They debate current global issues and try to create resolutions with solutions to those issues.
This year our school participated with 24 “delegates” (pupils) representing 5 countries: South Africa, South Sudan, Spain, Sweden and United Arab Emirates. The event took place from the 13th to the 18th of November and 3 “directors” (teachers) prepared and accompanied the delegates.
We as directors are truly proud of the work done by our delegates. Not only were they always very active in the preparatory phases, which were not easy because it was the first time for everyone to participate and/or organize such an event, but also during the conference; their participation and commitment were commendable.
We have seen with our own eyes how this experience has changed our students for the better, they have acquired greater confidence in themselves, in their ability to speak in public, in knowing how to listen to other people’s thoughts; they gained the awareness of being able to change things together, even difficult ones, by changing point of view and putting themselves in the other’s shoes. They acquired new language skills, formed relationships and challenged themselves, overcoming what they believed were their limits.
The result was that, among the many resolutions presented, three entire resolutions passed; they were presented by ESB students, Emma, Daniel and Tommaso, and were discussed and approved by the other members of the assemblies, not to mention the many approved amendments which we stopped counting.
